Changji: The layout of the cotton industry should not be “blooming everywhere”
This spring’s weather is as changeable as a child’s face. Despite this, the ups and downs of cotton sowing in Changji Prefecture have ended smoothly. According to estimates from the state Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau at the beginning of the month, the cotton sown area in our state has shrunk slightly this year, with 1.8 million acres expected to be planted, a reduction of nearly 20% from 2.248 million acres in 2022.
Cotton is Xinjiang’s dominant and characteristic industry. In the 1990s, it was known as Xinjiang’s “one white and one black” along with oil. After years of development, Xinjiang has become China’s largest high-quality commercial cotton base. As an important cotton production base in Xinjiang, why does the cotton planting area in our state fall instead of rising?
This year, Changji Prefecture took the delineation of cotton advantageous areas as a starting point and combined with the current situation of water resources to gradually adjust the cotton planting area and resolutely withdraw cotton production from ecologically fragile and high-risk areas. This is an adjustment made by the Changji Prefecture agricultural and rural department based on the consideration of optimizing cotton planting areas, adjusting cotton planting structure, and promoting highquality development of the industry. It is necessary for relevant departments in various places to implement specific measures and do a good job in implementation; it is also necessary for farmer friends to cooperate closely and jointly contribute to the high-quality and efficient development of Changji Prefecture’s cotton industry.
Cotton production in our state has withdrawn from ecologically fragile and high-risk areas. This retreat is to make better progress and promote the concentration of cotton production in Manas County, Hutubi County, Changji City and other advantageous areas. To ensure good cotton production, ensuring water is a particularly critical link. All localities should formulate effective measures based on actual conditions to ensure agricultural water supply and safeguard cotton production; at the same time, vigorously promote intelligent irrigation technology integrating water and fertilizer, strengthen the construction of high-standard farmland, and promote the construction of seed industry bases to lay a solid foundation for the construction of high-quality cotton bases in Changji Prefecture. Help the cotton industry improve quality and efficiency.
