Polish clothing and footwear sales drop by record

According to Rzeczpospolita daily, sales of clothing and footwear products in Poland fell by a record 22% in 2020, making it the worst year in the history of the industry. The daily reported that Poles spent just over PLN 21 billion (€4.6 billion) on clothing and footwear products in 2020, a decrease of PLN 6 billion (€1.3 billion) compared to the previous year.

The daily reported that even online sales growth could not stem the decline. However, there may be a recovery in the coming year due to reasons such as new brands expected to enter the market, which may attract new customers. Sebastian Sadowski-Romanov, president of ITRO Export Solutions, said that periods of crisis are ideal times to enter new markets or improve current conditions. The crisis, which has led to corporate bankruptcies and weakening, will create more room for stronger companies with better management of their financial resources. The company supports Polish companies in their export expansion activities. Rzeczpospolita daily reported, citing forecasts from Euromonitor, that sales could rise to PLN 23.5 billion (€5.2 billion) in 2021, but would still be well below 2019 figures.
