The situation of Pakistan’s textile exports is not optimistic
According to a report by Pakistan’s “Business Record” on April 3, Pakistan’s textile exports fell by 6% in February from the previous month and by 3% from the same period last year. In the first eight months of fiscal year 2017 (July 2016-February 2017), Pakistan’s textile exports fell by 2% compared with the same period last year. The downstream products of the textile industry chain have declined significantly, offsetting the positive impact of high value-added upstream products. The export volume of cotton yarn products increased by 3.9%, but the profit fell by 6.1%; the raw cotton products experienced the largest decline, with the export volume falling by 53% and the profit falling by 49%. During this period, cotton production continued to be sluggish for the second consecutive year, affecting the export of cotton products and forcing the costs of textile workers and downstream textile industries to increase. In contrast, the upstream products of the industrial chain showed positive factors: in the first eight months of fiscal year 2017, exports of knitted products, bedding products, and garment products generally increased, with increases of 2.1%, 8.9%, and 3.3% respectively.
Comments pointed out that the recovery of international cotton and linen prices has not had a direct positive price impact on Pakistan’s textile exports, resulting in an increase in the export volume of some products in Pakistan’s textile industry, but the profits have not increased. The commentary pointed out that although the energy supply situation in the textile industry has been greatly improved, the development of the textile industry still needs to pay attention to the core issue of the industry’s own competitiveness.
