The press conference pointed out that the advantage of Shantou’s textile and garment industry is that after more than 40 years of continuous development, it has become a characteristic industry with the largest proportion of Shantou’s manufacturing industry and a complete supporting system. It is Shantou’s first industry with an output value exceeding 100 billion yuan. At the same time, Shantou is the largest underwear production base in China, accounting for 45% of the country’s output, and plays a pivotal role in China’s underwear sector. Compared with key cities such as Suzhou, Wuxi, Jiaxing, and Shaoxing, Shantou’s patent layout started late but has developed rapidly since 2015. Currently, Shantou’s textile and clothing industry patent applications rank second in the country after Suzhou. The number of downstream patent applications in Shantou’s textile and apparel industry accounts for more than 96%, which is much higher than the global and Chinese levels. Among them, the number of patent applications for Shantou’s specialty products, underwear and homewear, account for more than 10% and about 5% of the world’s total respectively, making it the most advantageous segment for Shantou. The number oftalents in the direction of underwear and homewear is obvious. Individual innovation entities are active in innovation, but corporate strength still needs to be improved. The number of individual patent applications accounts for 91%, much higher than other major cities. At present, the number of design patents in the downstream clothing field of Shantou City has reached 9,637, ranking first in the country. At the same time, the number of famous brands of underwear and home wear ranks first in the same industry in the country, and the clothing design capabilities are strong. The development of the industry is in a golden period of growth.
The press conference pointed out that Shantou City’s textile and apparel industry is relatively weak in the middle and upper reaches. Among key technology branches, the number of patents in Shantou City’s dyeing, printing and automatic sewing directions is only single digits.
The press conference recommended strengthening cooperation in the upstream of the industrial chain and actively participating in the research of raw materials to further promote the development of downstream advantageous cities. Increase investment in R&D and targeted investment promotion in the midstream of the industrial chain. Expand the influence of brands downstream in the industrial chain.
