Chen Zhihua: With the transformation of “six modernizations” towards high-quality development, printing and dyeing quality efficiency is expected to achieve a steady recovery in 2023
In 2022, the printing and dyeing industry has experienced many challenges and pressures while also showing future-oriented vitality and resilience. ProductsExports have grown against the trend, transformation and upgrading have continued to advance, and outstanding enterprises have led innovations. The entire industry has anchored on the development goals of digitalization, quality, and greenness. It has contributed its due strength to the printing and dyeing industry to build a Chinese-style modern textile power. During this period, the China Printing and Dyeing Industry Association also made unremitting efforts, carried out a lot of pragmatic, innovative and forward-looking work, and played an important role. At the beginning of the new year, “China Textile” had a special interview with Chen Zhihua, President of the China Printing and Dyeing Industry Association. Under his narration, let’s review 2022 and strive for 2023!
“China Textile”: Could you briefly review and summarize the overall development of the printing and dyeing industry in 2022?
Chen Zhihua: 2022 is an extraordinary year. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to evolve, triggering high and volatile prices of energy, basic raw materials and other commodities, and printing and dyeing enterprises‘s production cost pressures becoming more prominent. ; Major economies such as Europe and the United States are accelerating the tightening of monetary policies under high inflation pressure, and the downward pressure on the world economy has increased; while the frequent occurrence of new crown epidemics has impacted the normal production and operation of the industry, it has also significantly inhibited the end consumption and demand of textiles and clothing. Insufficiency has resulted in the overall low production capacity utilization rate of printing and dyeing enterprises. Due to the interweaving and superposition of multiple unexpected factors, the development pressure faced by the industry has increased significantly.
From January to November 2022, the output of printed and dyed fabrics by 1,715 enterprises above designated size in the printing and dyeing industry was 50.435 billion meters, a year-on-year decrease of 7.05%; the operating income was 282.540 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.97%; the total profit was 11.298 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease 9.66%; sales profit margin was 4.00%, a year-on-year decrease of 0.69 percentage points; the industry’s loss area was 32.30%, a year-on-year increase of 7.85 percentage points, and the total losses of loss-making enterprises increased by 77.39% year-on-year.
From the above data, it can be seen that the economic operation of the printing and dyeing industry will be under obvious pressure in 2022, especially in terms of operating efficiency, with some companies experiencing large losses. However, in the face of difficulties, the industry has maintained its strategic focus. Enterprises in the industry have proactively expanded diversified international markets and promoted the industry’s foreign trade exports to achieve rapid growth, demonstrating the industry’s development resilience and vitality.
“China Textile”: In your opinion, what are the highlights of the development of the printing and dyeing industry in 2022?
Chen Zhihua: The development pressure faced by the printing and dyeing industry in 2022 objectively exists, but there are also development highlights.
First, exports of major products grew against the trend. From January to November 2022, the export volume of the eight major categories of printing and dyeing products reached 27.337 billion meters, a year-on-year increase of 7.83%; the export value was US$28.932 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13.09%; the average export unit price was US$1.06/meter, a year-on-year increase of 4.88%. Driven by increased demand in the international market and rising prices of finished products driven by raw materials, the export value hit a record high for the same period.
Second, the industry’s transformation and upgrading continues. Facing the complex and severe domestic and international situations, printing and dyeing enterprises have carried out fruitful thinking and practice in aspects such as lean management, green transformation, and intelligentupgrading. The vitality is further enhanced. In 2022, the association successfully held industry conferences such as the Management Annual Conference and the Environmental Protection Annual Conference. Corporate representatives and school experts focused on the themes of each conference, ranging from management innovation, technology research and development, and equipment upgrading. In-depth exchanges and results sharing were carried out in , information transformation and other aspects, and the trend of industry enterprises to open up new prospects in the changing situation and seek development in difficult situations continues to be demonstrated.
Third, the exemplary and leading role of outstanding enterprises continues to increase. In 2022, 21 printing and dyeing companies will be included in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Standard Conditions for the Printing and Dyeing Industry (2017 Edition)” Enterprise List (Fifth Batch)”, 5 printing and dyeing companies will be shortlisted for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Water Efficiency Leaders” list, and 2 printing and dyeing companies will be on the list The list of “2022Intelligent ManufacturingExcellent Scenarios” jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission and other four departments. In the announced 2022 ChinaTextile Industry Federation Science and Technology Awards, 4 technologies in the printing and dyeing field won the first prize for scientific and technological progress, and 8 technologies won the second prize for scientific and technological progress. The demonstration and driving role of advanced and typical enterprises in the industry has been further enhanced.
“China Textile”: In order to promote the high quality development of the industry, what key tasks will the Printing and Dyeing Industry Association do in 2022? Among them, what are the innovations?
Chen Zhihua: In 2022, faced with the complex situation of a century of changes and a century’s epidemic superimposed on each other, the association’s industry service work has withstood a major test, and has carried out a lot of pragmatic, innovative, and forward-looking work, while providing relief to the industry. It has played an important role in solving difficulties, promoting the stable development of the industry, and leading the transformation and upgrading of the industry.
First, carry out industry research to reflect the demands of enterprises, and take multiple measures to solve problems for enterprises. In 2022, the association carried out a number of special surveys to gain an in-depth understanding of the development of enterprises and provide timely and accurate feedback.Against the backdrop of upgrading, companies still have a lot to do.
On the other hand, from a global perspective, the global economy is likely to slow down significantly in 2023, external demand will further weaken, and the pressure on industry exports will increase. The World Bank lowered its global economic forecast for 2023 to 1.7% growth from 3.0% growth in June last year and warned of the risk of recession. At the same time, inflationary pressure in economies such as the United States and Europe remains high, and tight monetary policies will still be implemented in 2023. This has largely restricted the growth of demand in the international market and put industry exports under pressure.
Overall, opportunities and challenges exist, but the opportunities outweigh the challenges. The industry has a foundation and the ability to achieve a stable recovery. What industry enterprises need to do is to stay true to their original aspirations, strengthen their confidence, remain patient, focus on their main business, pioneer and innovate, and contribute to the advancement of Chinese-style modernization.
