In the studio, students were seen sitting around the embroidery frame. Wang Xuehui was twisting the embroidery needle in her hand. A strand of silk thread as thin as hair flowed smoothly in her hand, picking and winding a small particle. “Jing embroidery is an ancient traditional embroidery craft. As one of the ‘Eight Wonders of Yanjing’, it was once known as the ‘Four Embroideries’ together with Su, Hunan and Gu.” Wang Xuehui said that after the Ming Dynasty, The characteristics of Beijing embroidery became more and more distinctive. By the Qing Dynasty, Beijing embroidery developed more prosperously and even became famous overseas.
As a child, Wang Xuehui gradually fell in love with embroidery under the influence and guidance of his grandmother and mother. At the age of 16, Wang Xuehui entered the original Beijing Baizhifang Embroidery Factory as an apprentice as she wished. In 1980, the Xianghe Foreign Trade Bureau established the embroidery factory. Since then, she has taken root in Xianghe and has been inheriting Beijing embroidery skills for more than 40 years.
Wang Xuehui explores new ways of inheriting and educating people in “intangible cultural heritage”. He recruits apprentices and teaches skills in the form of a studio. He teaches embroidery stitching at the Xianghe County Cultural Center for three consecutive years and has served as an embroidery class teacher in Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and other schools for seven consecutive years. , to cultivate successors of Beijing embroidery skills.
“Like the little flower on the purse, three stitching methods including three-dimensional embroidery, spider web embroidery, and leaf embroidery must be combined. The hand setting the needle must be steady and the stitches must be well-proportioned…” In the video teaching, Wang Xuehui carefully formulated the training plan and Teaching courses will be changed from lecture-based courses to practical courses to reduce explanations and increase opportunities for students to practice. Every year, Wang Xuehui participates in “intangible cultural heritage” volunteer activities, takes Beijing embroidery to schools and companies, holds classes, and teaches techniques while demonstrating.
“Some of the professor’s students have opened their own clothing studios to create new Chinese-style Chinese clothes with a contemporary sense of fashion. This is a new interpretation of traditional culture, and it is also what I sow in the hearts of young people. A seed of Beijing embroidery.” Wang Xuehui said that she is particularly willing to be such a sower, so that more young people can fall in love with Beijing embroidery and better spread and inherit the profound Chinese traditional cultural treasures.
