Dunhuang is busy picking cotton before and after the “cold dew”: pilot cotton picking by machine innovates traditional farming
On October 8, in the snow-white cotton fields of Zhuanqukou Town, Dunhuang City, a large John Deere 7660 cotton picker was picking new cotton.
October 8th in Lanzhou is the “cold dew” of the 24 solar terms. There is a farmer’s proverb that “If you don’t pick cotton in the cold dew, don’t blame the weather for the frost.” This shows that the cold dew is a busy season for picking cotton. In the past few days, in the vast fields of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, cotton fields stretch as far as the eye can see. A large number of farmers and large-scale cotton picking machines have been picking cotton in the cotton fields. There is a scene of bumper harvest everywhere.
Dunhuang is one of the main cotton producing areas in Gansu Province, with high cotton yield and good quality. Nowadays, 50,000 acres of cotton in Dunhuang have entered the peak harvesting period. Cotton farmers are taking advantage of the fine weather to actively harvest, and the cotton picking work is expected to be completed by the end of October.
At the thousand-acre cotton picking demonstration site in Zhuanqukou Town, Dunhuang City, the John Deere 7660 cotton picking machine became the protagonist of the autumn harvest. Along with the buzzing sound of the machine, the snow-white cotton is “sucked” into the body of the cotton picker. While completing the picking task, the cotton is transported to the stacking point, and the cotton piled up like a mountain is completely white.
In recent years, Dunhuang has actively introduced and promoted planting management technologies such as precision seeding, dry sowing and wet sowing, water and fertilizer integration, and pest and disease prevention and control technologies. It has built 5 demonstration sites for machine-picked cotton per thousand acres, setting the stage for the city’s large-scale agriculture. , mechanization and intensive development have played a huge role in promoting demonstration.
In order to solve the problem of “lack of rural labor and who will plant the land”, Dunhuang also sent professional agricultural technicians and major Dunhuang cotton growers to many places in Xinjiang this year to conduct on-the-spot inspections and study of machine-picked cotton planting conditions.
Through large-scale, mechanized, and intelligent management of the machine-picked cotton industry, the output of high-yield fields has reached more than 500kg/mu, and some demonstration fields have carried out technical research to produce 600kg/mu; Through the application of intelligent control, water and fertilizer integration technology, navigation seeding, drone spraying and other technologies, the entire process has been basically mechanized, greatly reducing labor costs; through cost savings and efficiency gains, the enthusiasm for cotton planting has been greatly increased. It also increased the rent for farmers’ transferred land…
Dunhuang Municipal Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau stated that through the above inspection and study, they witnessed the advantages of large-scale, mechanized and intelligent production, learned about the planting experience and practices of machine-picked cotton, and found out the problems and problems existing in Dunhuang’s current cotton production. gap, and gained valuable experience in agricultural structural adjustment.
