The function of the main drive of the loom is to transmit the power of the motor to the main shaft and its related leisure parts through the transmission mechanism to realize various actions of the loom. The main drive should meet the following conditions:
(1) Start quickly, and after driving When beating up for the first time, the speed of the loom should reach or be close to the normal operating speed.
(2) The braking is smooth and rapid, the parking position is accurate, meets the process and operating requirements, and is conducive to restarting the car.
(3) Easy to operate, it not only has normal starting and braking functions, but also can realize certain extraordinary operations, such as inching forward and reverse weft search, automatic weft search, etc.
(4) Compact structure and stable performance.
The starting and braking mechanisms of the loom are mainly composed of the main transmission system, which drives the loom to operate at normal speed. The power transmission between the motor and the loom works through the main shaft pulley and a set of electromagnetic brakes, which not only ensures the rapid starting and braking of the loom, but also facilitates operation. Whenever a weft yarn breakage occurs, the loom is required to be braked quickly at the rear dead center position to facilitate operation and handling of broken weft; whenever a warp failure occurs, the loom is required to be braked quickly to stop at the center position of the weft yarn. Stop at the same position to facilitate troubleshooting; when starting, it is required that the loom has reached normal speed when it is turned to the front dead center for beat-up, to ensure that the weft is beaten up normally and to prevent the occurrence of sparse weaving defects.

In the direct transmission system, the starting torque of the motor must also be considered. The transmission system of other looms should also meet the load conditions of the loom (light or heavy loom), starting and braking, and special requirements related to operation and manipulation. For example: in order to start quickly, high-speed, heavy-duty looms and wide-width looms should use super-torque starting motors (special motors for looms in cloth machinery motors); some water-jet looms are equipped with frequency conversion devices for automatic weft search. After the weft is stopped, the shedding mechanism can be reversed appropriately to correct the shed. If cooperated with the automatic adjustment of the take-up and let-off mechanisms, it can also accurately align the cloth fell, facilitate the operation of blocking the carriage, and significantly reduce or eliminate the dense road when starting the machine.
