Jingdong, Yunnan: Planting mulberry and raising silkworms to weave a “new Silk Road” for wealth

The sericulture industry is one of the traditional pillar industries in Huashan Town, Jingdong County. When entering Potou Village, Huashan Town, acres of sericulture are glowing with vitality. In the sericulture garden, villager Li Taiguo was busy among the mulberry trees carrying a large basket on his back. He was seen holding the branches of the mulberry trees with one hand and flying left and right with the other hand, picking fresh mulberry leaves into the basket.
In Potou Village, it is now the intensive period for spring silkworms to spin silkworms and spin cocoons. In the silkworm rooms of every household, spring silkworms begin to spin silkworms and spin cocoons. Silkworm farmers are fully committed to the post-production management of spring silkworms. After more than ten days, the silkworms will be ready. Will enter the cocoon sales stage.
“My family has been raising silkworms for about seven years. Last year, I raised 8 silkworms. Each one cost 2,000 yuan and sold for about 20,000 yuan. This year I plan to raise 15 silkworms, which are expected to sell for about 30,000 yuan.” Li Taiguo, a villager in Potou Village, Huashan Town, said with a smile.
In recent years, the Huashan Town Party Committee and Government have increased investment in infrastructure and technical assistance, and explored the development path of scale, standardization, and industrialization. The sericulture industry has maintained a steady and positive development trend. Currently, 12 villages in the town are planting mulberry and raising silkworms, with a total area of mulberry leaves of more than 5,600 acres and more than 1,400 farmers. The total output value of silkworm cocoons will reach 20 million yuan in 2022.
Looking at Jingdong County, the county’s sericulture planting area is 34,000 acres in 2023, and the output of fresh cocoons is expected to exceed 3,000 tons, with an output value of more than 165 million yuan. In the next step, Jingdong County will increase investment in infrastructure, strengthen support for sericulture farmers, focus on building large planting villages, cultivating large breeding households, and strengthen technical services to make the sericulture industry bigger and stronger.
