Hukou, Jiangxi: Direct-seeded cotton turns high slopes into rich fields

After the beginning of summer, precipitation increased significantly. Agricultural technicians from Hukou County came to the fields to guide cotton farmers on how to sow cotton on high slopes.

“‘Zhongmian 425’ is a new variety of direct-seeded cotton. The higher the slope, the greater the planting density. More than 4,000 plants must be planted per acre to ensure high yields of direct-seeded cotton.” Zhou Yibo, a large local planter, hired more than 30 nearby villagers , seize the current good soil moisture conditions and complete 400 acres of direct-seeded cotton planting.

In order to ensure the smooth progress of cotton sowing work, Hukou County adopted cotton live broadcast technology for the first time this year and sent agricultural technicians to the cotton sowing site to provide guidance and services to help farmers solve technical problems and make every effort to ensure smooth sowing. “Currently, more than 40,000 acres of direct-seeded cotton have been planted in Hukou County, and more than 60% of this year’s cotton planting tasks have been completed.” said Yu Lianzhong, director of the economic cropping station of Hukou County Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau.

In recent years, Hukou County has combined with high-standard farmland construction to promote high slope land remediation work, revitalize idle rural land, increase dryland area, and develop dryland cash crops such as cotton and Chinese medicinal materials. At present, the county has transformed and renovated more than 40,000 acres of high-sloping land, which is expected to increase the output value by more than 40 million yuan. The former high-sloping land has become a rich field.
