Tongliang, Chongqing: Planting mulberry and raising silkworms to increase income and open up a new “silk” road for rural revitalization
On May 7, at the mulberry picking base in Sanpin Village, Damiao Town, citizens were taking advantage of the good time in early summer to enjoy the fun of picking.
Damiao Town is the town with the largest number of mulberry and sericulture plants in Tongliang, while Sanpin Village is the largest village in Damiao Town. “Our village has a long tradition of growing mulberry and raising silkworms. Currently, the village has a mulberry garden covering an area of 2,000 acres, raising 350 silkworms, and producing more than 300 tons of fresh mulberries.” said Hou He, secretary of the Party branch of Sanpin Village.
Hou He introduced that sericulture production, as a traditional characteristic industry in my country, plays a very important role in promoting the economic development of sericulture production areas and increasing farmers’ income. He did some calculations for reporters: the whole village raises 350 silkworms a year, and the income from each silkworm is 2,000 yuan. This alone can increase the village’s income by more than 700,000 yuan.
In recent years, Sanpin Village has relied on the technical support of the Tongliang Base of the Postdoctoral Mobile Station of Biology of Southwest University to establish the Life Tree (Chongqing) Sericulture Professional Cooperative, established a mechanized harvesting demonstration park of protein mulberry, and built mulberry leaf vegetables, Mulberry leaf powder, mulberry leaf tea, mulberry processing and other deep processing production lines, new sericulture breeding special rooms, etc. It has revolutionized the traditional sericulture model, promoted the separation of sericulture and mulberry, realized the scale, standardization, branding, and e-commerce of the sericulture industry, and promoted traditional agricultureTransformation and upgrading have promoted cross-border development of the industry.
It is understood that Sanpin Village has successfully introduced more than 200 acres of high-protein mulberry from Zhejiang. The successful introduction of this variety can be made into mulberry leaf powder and mulberry leaf feed, which can lay a solid foundation for the whole village to develop feed sericulture and edible fungi. At the same time, relying on the sericulture industry, Sanpin Village also introduced enterprises to develop a series of sericulture products and expand the industrial chain. At present, products such as dried mulberries, mulberry wine, silk quilts, mulberry leaf tea, mulberry leaf noodles, mulberry essential oil, and mulberry fruits have been developed, successfully expanding the market and increasing the added value of the industry and the income of the people.
“Since the development of the sericulture industry in the village, we can raise silkworms, sell mulberry fruits, and work in the sericulture base, which has increased our income and our days are becoming more and more promising.” Sanpin Village, Damiao Town Peng Caili, a member of the 2 community, said.
