Alar: Drones help cotton field management save costs, increase efficiency and make farming easier

Entering May, 2.1 million acres of cotton fields in Alar City, the First Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, have gradually entered the field management period. In the vast cotton fields, the addition of drones has made cotton field adjustment operations more efficient and precise, and cotton field management has become easier.

On May 9, in a cotton field in Xinkailing Town, the 16th Regiment of Alar City, the First Division, three drones soared over the cotton field and completed the chemical adjustment operation of 700 acres of cotton field in one hour.

In the past two years, with the development of smart agriculture, drones have been increasingly used in agricultural production. Compared with traditional manual and mechanical spraying, drone plant protection has the advantages of precision, efficiency, and safety. It can greatly improve the quality and yield of crops.

Yang Mingwen, an employee of Xinkailing Town of the 16th Regiment, said: “The work efficiency is relatively high. One drone can spray more than 200 acres of foliar fertilizer in one hour. The atomization is relatively uniform and the cotton seedlings can easily absorb it. The dosage is also relatively small, which reduces the cost and avoids the phenomenon of cotton seedlings being pressed by wheels.”

“Cotton conditioning by drone is an important technical measure during cotton growth. It mainly sprays plant growth regulators and some trace elements on the leaves to promote cotton to take root and strengthen seedlings, and effectively regulate cotton nutrition. Growth and reproductive growth make the later growth of cotton more scientific and effective, and at the same time reasonably control the plant height of cotton to facilitate later field management of cotton and mechanized harvesting in autumn.” Tan Xin, technician at the Agricultural Development Center of Xinkailing Town, Sixteenth Regiment explain.

This year, the First Division Alar City planted 2.1 million acres of cotton, and promoted “dry sowing and wet planting” area of 1.745 million acres. Using the new water-saving technology of “dry sowing and wet planting”, sowing is done 5 to 7 days earlier than in previous years, speeding up the cotton growth process.

During the field management period in previous years, workers sporadically used drones for surveying. After enjoying the benefits, more and more employees chose to use drones for surveying. This year, various regiment towns in Alar City of the First Division have invested in 594 plant protection drones to meet the cotton distribution needs of employees.
