Libo County, Qiannan, Guizhou Province: Silkworms spin out a new “silk” road to wealth
In late April, more than 1,000 acres of mulberry trees in Yaoai Village, Maolan Town, Libo County formed a “mulberry sea”. At a glance, the mulberry trees were growing gratifyingly, with luxuriant branches and leaves. Although the mulberry trees were not tall, , but the mulberry leaves are bigger than the others. In the vast “mulberry sea”, farmers carry out the work of picking mulberry leaves in an orderly manner. The fresh mulberry leaves are packed in woven bags one by one and transported to the silkworm house for later use.
Recently, the first batch of silkworms in Yaoai Village have spun silk into cocoons. The cocoons are plump and snow-white, neatly arranged in square clusters. The rows of square clusters in the silkworm house are filled with farmers. It is the crystallization of our labor throughout the spring and the hope of the new year.
After the silkworm cocoons “bulge”, farmers will pick off the square clusters of silkworm cocoons one by one. They don’t want the small yellow ones or the soft ones, leaving only the white and fat ones. Such cocoons are The best thing is that when merchants come to collect it, they can sell it at a good price.
Farmer Yu Youfu said: “This year’s first batch of silkworm cocoons has matured. In the past two days, businessmen from Guiyang, Liuzhou, Jinchengjiang and other places came to collect it. My family raised 4 baskets of the first batch, with 260 cocoons. The price is good this year. It costs 30 yuan per catty and has been sold for 7,800 yuan. It is expected to raise more than ten batches throughout the year and earn more than 100,000 yuan.”
Farmer Ou Yubo said: “I raised 6 baskets of the first batch of silkworms this year. Each basket of larvae cost 80 yuan. In the end, I got more than 390 kilograms of cocoons. Because my cocoons are of good quality, I pay a few cents more per kilogram than others. The final sale was 12,000 yuan. I adopted a ‘stepped’ breeding model. The second batch of silkworms is already four years old and will spin silk again in a few days.”
Wei Shuangsha, deputy director of the village committee, introduced that a batch of silkworms start from larvae and start to spin silk when they reach the fifth instar. At this time, it is necessary to manually pick up the silkworms and put the silkworms one by one into the square cluster. The grid clusters are hung up, so that the cocoons raised in this way are distinct and will not be contaminated by silkworm feces. They are clean and white. The whiter and larger the cocoons, the higher the price. In recent years, the price of silkworms has been good, and a batch of silkworms has been raised for ten years. In just a few days, I can earn six to seven thousand yuan. Now more and more people are willing to raise silkworms.
It is understood that the development of sericulture in Yaoai Village has a history of 18 years since 2005. It is one of the areas that actively responded to the national implementation of the “Eastern Mulberry Movement to the West” project. In recent years, party committees and governments at all levels have With the strong support of the government, large planting households have received support. More and more farmers have joined the “big family” of mulberry silkworms, and the mulberry planting area has further expanded. At present, the mulberry garden in Yaoai Village covers an area of more than 1,000 acres, and there are more than 60 households growing mulberry and raising silkworms in the village, with an annual output value of more than 2 million yuan.
