Yanbian, Sichuan: The ancient mulberry industry is reborn on the banks of the Yalong River
In early summer, in Yanbian County, Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, located on the bank of the Yalong River, the mountains and forests gradually turned green.
Just after lunch, Lao Xie greeted the workers into the silkworm room, where there were many “white fat people” waiting to eat.
Old Xie’s name is Xie Zhonglin. He is from Heping Village, Huimin Town, Yanbian County. He is also a major silkworm breeder in Yanbian County. In the small courtyard of his home, there is a standardized silkworm co-breeding room of about 100 square meters, which contains more than 300 pieces of silkworm paper from 150 households in Huimin Town. Each piece of silkworm paper produces about 20,000 silkworms.
“Little silkworms cannot starve. They need to add mulberry leaves three times a day.” Lao Xie said that in order to make it easier for the little silkworms to eat, they need to cut the mulberry leaves into small pieces and then spread them on the silkworm paper, six or seven people at a time. Doing it together will take more than 2 hours at the fastest.
The history of planting mulberry and raising silkworms in Yanbian County can be traced back to more than 500 years ago. Mulberry gardens are mainly distributed in low mountain valleys. From late March to late October, at least six seasons of silkworms can be raised a year.
In 2000, Xie Zhonglin started raising silkworms. In order to improve his sericulture technology, he actively participated in technical guidance classes organized by the county and continued to explore in practice, gradually becoming a well-known “soil expert” in sericulture.
In recent years, Lao Xie has continued to expand the scale of joint breeding of small silkworms. “Now there are too many orders, and there are not enough silkworm rooms and workers. Sometimes we can’t even take care of our own silkworms.” Lao Xie said.
Liu Gang, director of the Sericulture Research Institute of the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told reporters that the scale of Sichuan’s sericulture industry ranks second in the country, and the characteristic of sericulture in Yanbian County is that it can be used for both fruits and leaves.
Li Pingxia, a villager in Xinlin Village, Huimin Town, has been a mulberry farmer for four generations. In 2014, Li Pingxia established Panzhihua Luyuan Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. to focus on the deep processing of agricultural products. Today, in addition to having mature dried mulberry and jam production lines, the company has also established a 100-acre mulberry picking experience park. “We want to lead more villagers to make the mulberry garden develop intelligently and on a large scale,” Li Pingxia said.
In the Sericulture Modern Agriculture Park of Yanbian County, the second phase of the mulberry deep processing production line of Panzhihua Sixi Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. has been officially launched. In addition to the original fruit wine, it can also can canned fresh puree and original juice.
Zhou Yiqiang, deputy mayor of Huimin Town, told reporters that in recent years, Huimin Town has continuously improved the sericulture industry chain. In 2022, the total output value of the sericulture industry will reach 160 million yuan, and the per capita disposable income of the town will reach 22,446 yuan.
