A story of ten years of changes in Tianjin’s “Miansan” century-old factory

If you look at Tianjin from a bird’s eye view, apart from the high-rise buildings pointing straight to the sky, the various small Western-style buildings known as the “International Architecture Expo”, and the endless flow of cruise ships on the Haihe River, what else is unique to this city?

On the east bank of the Haihe River in Hedong District, Tianjin, there is a group of brick-red buildings. A hundred years ago, this was a textile factory with roaring machines and busy workers; a hundred years later, it has become a trendy neighborhood where young people gather and creative collisions occur.

This trendy gathering place called “Tianjin Cotton 3 Creative District” was formerly the former Tianjin Third Cotton Mill. Its history can be traced back to the Yuda Cotton Mill and Baocheng Cotton Mill, which were founded in the 1920s. “Tianjin Textile Centennial Events” records that in 1930, Baocheng Cotton Mill resolutely implemented an 8-hour work system in the factory in view of the fact that 12-hour work was “exhausting and poor in production, causing harm to both labor and capital”, becoming the first in China.

In 1950, this textile factory area was officially renamed Tianjin No. 3 Cotton Spinning Factory, referred to as “Mian San”, and quickly became the main force in Tianjin’s textile industry, making great contributions to Tianjin’s textile industry ranking among the top three in the country for a long time. It is an important relic of Tianjin’s light textile industry.

Entering the 21st century, with the eastward shift of Tianjin’s industrial strategy and the relocation and transformation of old enterprises, textile companies, chemical companies, and machinery companies have relocated one after another. The rumbling machines gradually stopped running with the development of the city, leaving behind this group of buildings.

“When we first came to inspect, the park was overgrown with weeds, and it was a depressing scene. The entire factory area was also surrounded by walls, and the factory building was relatively dark, and could even be said to be a bit spooky.” Tianjin Miansan Creative Enterprise Chen Qiang, general manager of Management Services Co., Ltd., recalled the first time he met Mian San 10 years ago.

The buildings in disrepair and the factory area overgrown with weeds have been forgotten for more than ten years in the prime location by the Haihe River.

In 2013, Tianjin Housing Group began to implement protective renovation of the Miansanlao factory area. During the renovation, the thick brick walls, rows of pipes, and mottled floors were preserved, making the entire space full of the vicissitudes of the industrial civilization era.

Plant a plane tree to attract the phoenix to perch. In 2015, the upgraded and renovated Miansan was renamed as the “Mian3 Creative Block” and officially invited investment, becoming Tianjin’s first new creative block that integrates creative design, business consulting, art display, new media services, etc.

Beijing Hanmu Chunhua Animation Technology Co., Ltd. is quite famous in the industry for releasing an animated film “Luo Xiaohei Zhan Ji” a few years ago. As one of the fastest-growing animation companies in China in recent years, in 2021, the company decided to relocate here as a whole from Beijing, where it has been developing for many years.

“Starting from the summer of 2021, we have colleagues coming to Tianjin one after another for inspection. After comparing many aspects, it is more in line with our temperament and style. We finally decided to move the entire company to Tianjin.” Hanmu Chunhua Animation Technology The person in charge of the company told reporters, “Some colleagues have begun to settle down and buy houses in Tianjin. This is a place where we can take root.”

Since 2015, after more than 7 years of development, the comprehensive occupancy rate of Mian 3 Creative Street has reached 86%. Currently, more than 180 companies have settled in Mian 3 Creative Street, with a registered capital of more than 2 billion yuan, providing various types ofEmploymentMore than 2,300 positions.

“From 2013 to now, our protection and utilization of Mian 3 has been very successful. We plan to attract tourists from all over the country to enter Mian 3 by continuously building the IP of Mian 3. At the same time, We also want to develop catering and entertainment carriers so that tourists can come in and sit down.” Chen Qiang told reporters.

Promoting “Cotton 3” onto the fast track of development is the highlight of Hedong District’s development this year. In response to the current problems that the infrastructure construction of “Cotton 3” needs to be improved, as early as the beginning of this year, Hedong District had put on the agenda basic work such as new project renovation, dock construction, popular gathering, and peripheral supporting facilities. A special team for implementing the Mian 3 Creative Block was also established at the beginning of the year. Eight working groups will provide nanny-style services to provide human resources, legal consulting and other services to key high-quality enterprises and enterprises that are in line with the positioning of the digital technology industry.
