Small silkworms breed together to enhance quality

Modern silkworm baskets have replaced the traditional bamboo silkworm baskets, which are convenient and practical, and mulberry leaf cutting is also available. Qin Juxian is carefully adding mulberry leaves to the silkworms after using a new shearing machine that saves costs and frees up her hands. She said: “This year our family has more than 20 acres of mulberry land. Last year, we raised more than 70 silkworms in the four seasons, and the income was close to 150,000 yuan. This year, with the addition of greenhouse breeding and co-cultured silkworms, it is no problem to increase the income by 20,000 yuan.” She said The so-called co-breeding model is a breeding model in which the professional cooperatives of mulberry farmers select local breeding experts to serve as technical guidance and management of the growth period of the small silkworms of the free-range villagers. After the small silkworms are raised, they are handed over to the silkworm farmers for breeding, and the villagers and the professional cooperative jointly cultivate model. The co-breeding model can ensure silkworm farmers’ breeding technology and effectively reduce breeding risks. Currently, there are 32 breeding cooperatives with co-cultivating capabilities, and villagers in 48 villages (communities) can enjoy the results of co-cultivation. Four of them, Xiangcheng, Yunnanyi, Liuchang, and Hedian, have achieved an annual output of more than 10,000 tons of cocoons.
A strong organization of professional silkworm farmers
At present, Xiangyun County has 1 sericulture technology promotion station, 7 sericulture service stations (also cocoon harvesting and drying), and 10 automatic cocoon drying production lines. In 2022, there will be 617 professional sericulture farmers in Hedian Town with an annual income of more than 20,000 yuan, 524 professional sericulture farmers with an annual income of more than 50,000 yuan, and 8 sericulture family farms with an annual income of more than 100,000 yuan in the county. There are more than 20,000 professional silkworm farmers, and organized development has given more silkworm farmers a boost of development.
Newly planted mulberry garden to increase scale
In 2022, the mulberry orchard area in Xiangyun County will reach 95,837 acres. A total of 97 villages (communities) in the county plant mulberry and raise silkworms. The annual silkworm breeding volume will reach 144,147, and the annual fresh cocoon output will reach 5,613 tons. Farmers’ income from selling cocoons reached 303.16 million yuan, with a comprehensive output value of 500 million yuan. From 2017 to 2022, the county’s mulberry orchard area increased by more than 5,300 acres, and a total of 7 villages use mulberry planting, sericulture, and comprehensive development of sericulture as supporting industries. “In 2023, 547 acres of new mulberry orchards were planted in the county, involving 37 villages (communities) and more than 840 farmers.
