Guangdong releases the country’s first technical group standard for zombie silkworm breeding and production

On December 15, the country’s first group standard “Technical Specifications for Breeding and Production of Bombyx Silkworms” was officially released and will be officially implemented on March 15, 2023. The standard was jointly developed by the Sericulture and Agricultural Products Processing Institute of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Guangdong Nanyang Pharmaceutical Industry Technology System Innovation Team (Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Guangzhou Huibiao Testing Technology Center, Guangdong Agricultural Reclamation Administration, Guangzhou Caizhilin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Jointly compiled by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Guangdong Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine).

Standards closely follow quality control. It is reported that the standard stipulates the technical specifications for the breeding and production of silkworms, traditional Chinese medicinal materials of animal origin, including breeding sites, species selection, breeding and production technical regulations, mulberry orchard and silkworm pest control, quality requirements and document management. Compared with the Bombyx mori standards in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the standards have increased the requirements for indicators such as Bombyx mori alcohol-soluble extracts and aflatoxins, and added harmful heavy metals and 33 pesticide residue indicators.

Bombyx mori is the dried body of the 4th to 5th instar larvae of the Bombyxidae insect, Bombyx mori, which is infected (or artificially inoculated) and killed by Beauveria bassiana. It is a commonly used animal medicinal material. It has the functions of dispersing stagnation, etc., and is mainly used to treat liver wind and phlegm, epileptic convulsions, infantile convulsions, tetanus, apoplexy, wind-heat headache, red eyes and sore throat, rubella and itching, and sore cheeks, etc. Bombyx mori ranks among the top 10% of formula drugs used in hospitals, and the domestic annual demand exceeds 3,000 tons.

Bombyx silkworms are mainly derived from the by-products formed by individual silkworms infected with Beauveria bassiana during the silkworm raising process. The quality is uneven, and aflatoxin exceeds the standard. Moreover, with the improvement of silkworm disease prevention and control technology, the production of silkworms is increasingly limited. In addition, other diseased silkworms or uninfected silkworms are often sold as zombie silkworms in the market, and the safety and effectiveness of the drug cannot be guaranteed.

Zhan Ruoting, chief expert and researcher of the Guangdong Province Southern Medicine Industry Technology System Innovation Team, believes that the release of this standard provides important technical guidance for the breeding and production of bulk medicinal materials, zombie silkworms, and is conducive to promoting the standardized production of zombie silkworms and ensuring the Medicinal materials are “safe, effective, stable and controllable”; it is necessary to cooperate with relevant large-scale traditional Chinese medicine enterprises in Guangdong as soon as possible to carry out the construction of an intelligent industrialization base to build the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay for Guangdong Demonstration was given in the district’s traditional Chinese medicine highland.

The Sericulture and Microbial Resource Processing and Utilization Team of the Institute of Sericulture and Agricultural Products Processing, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, conducted research on standardized production technology of Bombyx mori earlier in the country and screened out Beauveria bassiana strains and suitable silkworm varieties that have advantages in Bombyx silkworm production. , optimized the conditions of key production links such as Beauveria inoculation, breeding management, harvesting, stiffening, and drying methods, and developed a series of technologies such as Beauveria rapid rejuvenation technology, Beauveria spore viability determination technology, and Bombyx silkworm disease prediction technology. Key technologies, a mature standardized breeding and production technology system for zombie silkworms has been established, and 3 invention patents and 1 international patent have been authorized.

In the past two years, the project team has cooperated with Guangdong Nongken Tropical Agriculture Research Institute Co., Ltd. to conduct multiple batches of pilot tests. Compared with commercially available silkworms, the silkworms produced using this technology are larger in size, uniform and neat among individuals, with white powdery frost-like aerial hyphae and conidia covering the surface, and an obvious bright black or bright brown color in the middle of the section. Silk gland ring, all indicators are in compliance with the provisions of the “Chinese Pharmacopoeia”. Moreover, the alcohol-soluble extract content can reach more than 25%, the aflatoxin and heavy metal content are far below the limit standards of traditional Chinese medicinal materials, and 33 banned pesticides have not been detected. The safety and effectiveness of Bombyx mori have been significantly improved.

Researcher Liao Sentai, chairman of the Guangdong Province Southern Medicine Cultivation Standardization Technical Committee and subject leader of the team, said that he hopes to lead the standardized breeding and production of silkworms through the release of group standards and ensure the effectiveness and safety of Chinese medicinal materials. In the past two years, the project team has established good cooperative relationships with Guangdong Nanyang Pharmaceutical Industry Technology System Innovation Team (Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Guangdong Agricultural Reclamation Administration, Guangzhou Caizhilin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and Guangzhou Huibiao Testing Technology Center, etc., bringing together We have combined forces in all aspects of Bombyx silkworm scientific research, production, sales, quality inspection, etc., and will work together to promote the industrialized production of Bombyx silkworm and build Bombyx silkworm into a characteristic new southern medicine.

Xing Dongxu, a member of the project team and a researcher at the Institute of Sericulture and Agricultural Products Processing of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that the project confirmed for the first time that the medicinal quality of zombie silkworms is related to the degree of stiffness, and revealed the quality formation mechanism of zombie silkworms. “Next, we will establish a more effective method for evaluating the quality of zombie silkworms, realize scientific identification and classification of commercially available zombie silkworms, and provide important conditions for the quality control of zombie silkworms.”
