Economic Observer: Why is the foreign trade of the “International Textile Capital” picking up?

In November this year, the number of foreign trade orders in Keqiao District, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, the “International Textile Capital”, increased compared with October, and the “Foreign Trade Prosperity Index” and “Foreign Trade Price Index” both increased month-on-month. With the Chinese Spring Festival less than two months away, many textile companies have stepped up shipments and it is expected that foreign trade will continue to pick up.

The world’s largest textile distribution center – China Textile City is located in Keqiao District, where nearly a quarter of the world’s fabrics are traded every year. Sold in 192 countries and regions.

Since the beginning of this year, the downward pressure on the global economy has increased. According to the latest “China·KeqiaoTextile Index” (hereinafter referred to as: ” Index”), after the “Foreign Trade Prosperity Index” reached its peak in May, it continued to decline in a volatile manner, and it did not “bottom out” until November.

The “Index” shows that the “Foreign Trade Prosperity Index” closed at 776.69 points in November, a month-on-month increase of 0.51%; the “Foreign Trade Price Index” closed at 171.48 points, a month-on-month increase of 1.07%. Wei Yinan, head of the “Index” compilation office, told reporters that the above-mentioned two indexes comprehensively analyzed various data such as sales volume, sales volume, gross profit margin of goods, confidence coefficient, etc., and the increase was hard-won.

Wei Yinan said that, especially in the second half of this year, in order to deal with trade problems, the government, industries, and enterprises have tried every means to explore the international market and stabilize orders.

For example, in September, the Keqiao District Council for the Promotion of International Trade created a “Foreign Trade Shared Living Room” to attract foreign trade-related service entities to settle in and provide a one-stop solution to corporate foreign trade service needs; in mid-November, Keqiao held the 2022 Fifth World Textile Merchant Conference and The 24th China Shaoxing Keqiao International Textile Expo (Autumn) in 2022 will set up 20 “Digital Textile Expo” procurement matchmaking meetings, and representatives of the textile industry from South Korea, Vietnam and other “Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement” (RCEP) member countries will be connected participate.

In addition to building a supply and demand trade platform, the local area has also opened up new international freight channels. In November, the first China-Europe (Asia) freight train “Keqiao” departed from the Horgos Port in Xinjiang, carrying textile fabrics worth US$4.5 million, and arrived in Central Asia. Keqiao has now entered the “sea-rail combined transport” era”.

Foreign trade is picking up, and it is inseparable from textile companies seizing the changing trends in the global consumer market and actively optimizing product mix.

“In recent years, people have paid great attention to sports and health, and the international market has an increasing demand for sports fabrics, so we have changed the supply side.” Zhang, product research and development director of Shaoxing Yangshi Textile Co., Ltd., who has been deeply involved in the foreign trade market for nearly 10 years When interviewed, Bin said that based on market demand, the company has developed various sports fabrics such as antibacterial, anti-UV, and quick-drying fabrics. In the first 11 months of this year, the export volume of fabrics increased by 20% year-on-year. %.

Right now, the company’s workers are rushing to make export orders. Zhang Bin said, “There are still 1 million meters of fabrics that need to be produced before the upcoming Chinese Spring Festival, involving many countries and regions such as Europe and Southeast Asia.”

“Index” predicts that Keqiao’s textile and apparel exports will show a slight upward trend month-on-month in December this year. Shen Kaifang, chairman of the Keqiao Textile Industry Innovation Research Institute of Xi’an Polytechnic University, explained in an interview that due to the special nature of the time, China’s Spring Festival is the peak export period. “The textile foreign trade industry usually has a long Spring Festival holiday, which is equivalent to the year before. Within two months, all the goods for the New Year holiday will be shipped out.”

The textile and apparel industry is a highly globalized industry. In Shen Kaifang’s view, to enhance new advantages in textile foreign trade, brand added value and sales teams are the core. “The most important thing is to actively develop new materials that meet market demand.” Only when products are hard-core can they be competitive.”
