Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the results of some key special projects under the National Key Research and Development Plan. The China Silk Museum took the lead in applying for the “Cultural Technology and Modern Service Industry” “The special “Research on the Deterioration Mechanism and Preventive Protection Strategies of Leather Cultural Relics” project (2022YFF0904100) was approved.
This project is jointly sponsored by China Silk Museum, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Sichuan University, Zhejiang University, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology, Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology, Inner Mongolia Museum, and Chengdu Museum (ranking In no particular order) ten other units will apply together.
The history of tanning is an extremely important part of the history of human development and is closely related to the development of the history of human civilization. A large number of leather cultural relics unearthed or passed down in our country are of great value for demonstrating Chinese civilization. The project will carry out testing and analysis of leather materials, chemical components, physical properties, microstructure, tanning agents, etc. of decayed leather cultural relics, build a basic database of leather cultural relics, and study the biochemistry of leather collagen denaturation under the influence of different tanning agents in ancient times. Essence; study the degradation products of collagen fibers in leather cultural relics under dry and saturated conditions; study the impact of the loss of the main components of leather on the morphological changes of the collagen fiber network, and establish a component loss-morphological change model; study the quantification of the degree of decay of leather cultural relics assessment method. In this way, technology research and development, mechanism research, model construction, strategy proposal and practical application are implemented in an integrated manner.
