Xinjiang Corps: The art of embroidering puppets shows the regional customs of Xinjiang

The old man selling cantaloupe, the dancing girl, the farmyard in the 1960s and 1970s, the herdsmen riding horses…these scenes with a strong sense of life have been captured by Hongshan Farm in Xinjiang Xinxing City Craftsman Wang Ju vividly demonstrates the art of embroidering puppets.

Wang Ju, 45, is a well-known local craftsman. When I was a child, I watched my mother magically sew large and small floral fabrics into beautiful dresses for her and her sister, and I became obsessed with needlework. But she never imagined turning her needlework into art.

The craft of embroidering puppets is a new technique created by Shan Xiumei. The materials used are mainly cotton and cloth. It uses embroidery techniques to shape the facial features of the puppet on the carcass made of the highly elastic material PP cotton, and then matches it with Xinjiang-style clothing and props to create the puppet. This technique of combining embroidery and sculpture is called embroidery sculpture craft.

Wang Ju has not been idle recently, and was invited to show her embroidered puppet works. In the community meeting room on Hongxing Road in Hongshan Farm, residents constantly come to admire the embroidered puppet works.
