Liumaowan Town, Shawan City: Cotton is sprouting and a bumper harvest is in sight
It is a good season for wheat, yellow and cotton, and it is another good harvest year. At present, 142,000 acres of cotton in Liumaowan Town, Shawan City are growing well and have gradually entered the catdding period. Some farmers have taken measures such as picking cotton on the ground and spraying defoliants with drones to prepare for the autumn harvest.
On August 26, at the Runhao Cooperative planting base in Shamenzi New Village, Liumaowan Town, looking around, cotton plants were covered with cotton bolls, and some cotton bolls had split to reveal snow-white cotton wool. Agricultural technicians were working in the cotton fields. Check the conditions of cotton bolls, fruit setting and fluffing, diseases and insect pests, and guide cotton farmers to do a good job in field management during the middle and late stages of cotton growth to ensure a good cotton yield.
Wang Shengjun is a large grower in Shamenzi New Village. Through the guidance of agricultural technicians, scientific management and dry sowing and wet planting methods, the 130 acres of cotton he planted this year are growing well, with an average of seven or eight cotton bolls per plant. It has entered the critical period for the growth of bolls and catkins, and a bumper harvest is in sight.
“Judging from the current growth situation, the overall growth of cotton this year is very good. At present, conventional techniques such as pest control and post-field management must be strengthened to ensure a bumper cotton harvest. The yield is expected to be 500 kilograms per mu.” Cotton farmer in Shamenzi New Village Wang Shengjun said.
In a cotton field not far away, cotton farmer Yang Chengyun was spraying pesticides from a drone to prevent thrips and pests, ensuring the normal growth of cotton during the boll-bursting period. It is understood that drone operation is the “messenger” of smart agriculture. It is fast, efficient, time-saving and labor-saving, and can complete spraying operations of more than 100 acres in just one hour.
Zhou Lilu, a staff member of the Liumaowan Town Agricultural (Animal Husbandry) Development Center, said: “This year, the cotton growth in the town is generally very satisfactory, the overall output is considerable, and the cotton tufting period is earlier than in previous years. At present, the water needs to be stopped in time to avoid heavy flooding. Use heavy fertilizers to prevent cotton from growing again. It is expected that large-scale picking will begin in mid-September.”
In the next step, Liumaowan Town will comprehensively carry out water and fertilizer management, pest and disease control, use of defoliants, mechanical harvesting, etc. in accordance with the idea of ”stabilizing cotton, improving fruit, strengthening livestock, promoting characteristics, and promoting processing”. Skills training will comprehensively improve the scientific management level of cotton growers, lay a solid foundation for stable and high cotton yields, and facilitate a bumper harvest.
