Fujian’s shoe industry’s “intelligent manufacturing” empowers new consumption with individuality, 15 seconds to measure and order shoes, 2 hours for single-piece production

Jointly created by China Central Radio and Television and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the large-scale integrated media report “Intelligent China” launched by the Financial Program Center entered Fujian Province today. The textile, footwear and clothing industry is Fujian’s traditional advantageous industry, and Putian, Fujian is known as the “Chinese Shoe City”. It is said that one pair of every 10 pairs of shoes produced in the country is produced in Putian. In order to make a good pair of shoes for consumers, what kind of solutions will intelligent manufacturing provide?

The reporter came to the factory store of a shoemaking company in Putian, Fujian, and heard that shoes can be made to measure and large-scale customization can be achieved here.

Here, there is a foot big data collection and analysis instrument, which was jointly developed by manufacturing companies and scientific research institutes. In just 15 seconds, it can automatically measure and analyze 54 items of data on both feet and recommend suitable shoes.

The staff told reporters that a pair of shoes can be produced in as little as 2 hours. After placing an order, the data is immediately transmitted to the factory’s central control system, and the system immediately arranges production. This link alone has broken the traditional minimum order limit, and production of one pair of shoes can be arranged without significantly increasing costs.

A pair of shoes needs to go through multiple processes such as uppers, soles, and shoe last shaping. A group of high-speed flying looms are weaving shoe uppers fully automatically. The reporter noticed that the yarn colors of each machine are different, and the system will intelligently split orders with different patterns and assign them to designated machine models for production.

Subsequently, the AGV cars in the workshop were dispatched to send the semi-finished products to the next process. Here, the connection between processes relies on unmanned logistics to improve a lot of efficiency. Up to 1,000 pairs of customized shoes can be produced in 10 hours. The AGV car comes to the next process, auxiliary materials are assembled. The shoe upper, tongue and other components will be put into a basket with a radio frequency chip. This chip will always accompany the order, enabling full process traceability. The human-machine relay cooperates, and then enters the shoe last selection process.

So, how can shoe lasts be customized? In fact, the principle is that through the data measured by the client, each shoe size is automatically matched with 5 to 9 tall, short, fat and thin sub-shoe sizes, which greatly reduces the customization cost. In this step, the robotic arm in the octagonal shelf will select the shoe last corresponding to the order from more than 500 shoe lasts and hand it to the workers for finalization. This is also the most critical step.

The next step is to ship the finished product. Different from the uniform products coming out of ordinary production lines, every pair of shoes coming out here is different. As soon as the shoes come out, they are packed and shipped immediately. With the characteristics of on-demand production and instant delivery, the factory has achieved zero inventory of finished shoes, solving the company’s inventory pain points.
