A small piece of mulberry leaf has become the “golden leaf” for local villagers in Zhongao Town, Dazu District to get rich. Today, more than 10,000 acres of local mulberry gardens look particularly fresh and green under the sunlight. In the mulberry garden, mulberry farmers are taking advantage of the coolness of the early morning to pick mulberry leaves. Next to them are the standardized small silkworm co-breeding center and the modern large silkworm breeding workshop.

Dazu has a mild climate, a long frost-free period, and suitable soil for a wide variety of species. It has a tradition and foundation of sericulture since ancient times. In promoting rural revitalization, local technology has been introduced to upgrade the traditional sericulture industry.

At present, Gengshengji (Chongqing) Ecological Agriculture has developed 17 member companies based on the model of “leading enterprises + cooperatives (family farms) + farmers”, covering Zhongao, Guoliang, Zhuxi, Baoxing, etc. In 17 villages in 7 towns, more than 20,000 acres of standardized and intensive mulberry and vegetable intercropping bases and 24 breeding workshops have been built.

Silkworms are full of treasures. In order to extend the industrial chain to the maximum extent, Zhongao Town innovated a recycling and diversified utilization model, focusing on the integrated development of the entire industrial chain such as silkworm breeding, deep processing of mulberry silkworms, and mulberry fruit picking, and built a sorting center, a mulberry leaf tea production workshop, and a silk The 20-acre sericulture comprehensive processing experience area, which is integrated into the production workshop, is expected to produce 300,000 boxes of mulberry leaf tea, 400 tons of silkworm cocoons, and 30,000 beds of silk quilts throughout the year; relying on mulberry picking to open a rural tourism experience route, launch mulberry wine, mulberry leaves Tea and other commodities.

The development of the sericulture industry has brought good news to local villagers. Guansi Village in Zhongao Town is a Chongqing municipal-level poverty alleviation village. Liu Yufen, a poor household, has come to Gengshengji (Chongqing) Ecological Agriculture to engage in mulberry leaf management and picking in 2019. She can receive a monthly salary of more than 2,000 yuan, and her annual income reaches more than 20,000 yuan. “Sericulture is a labor-intensive industry. The mulberry leaves grow from the beginning of March to the end of October every year. During the peak labor period, Guansi Village alone has 40 villagers pick mulberry leaves, and together with other bases, the total number of people employed every day can reach thousands. Today, the sericulture industry has become a local characteristic pillar industry to solve the surplus rural labor force and promote industrial revitalization.” Li Ye said.

In the next step, the local area will also launch rural tourism experience routes focusing on silkworm breeding, deep processing of mulberry silkworms, and fruit and mulberry picking, and launch mulberry wine, mulberry leaf tea and other products to maximize the extension and promote the integrated development of the entire industry chain.
